Das Projekt Provenienzforschung in der außereuropäischen anthropologischen Sammlung der Universitätsmedizin Rostock wird von der  Stiftung Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste (siehe Pressemitteilung) für den Zeitraum vom 15.9.2020 bis zum 14.9.2021 gefördert. Der Arbeitsbereich Geschichte der Medizin und das Institut für Anatomie der Universitätsmedizin Rostock untersuchen die Sammlung außereuropäischer, menschlicher Schädel, die sich heute im Anatomischen Institut befinden. Vor rund 150 Jahren hatte der Mediziner Friedrich Merkel (1845–1919) diese als „Racen-Schädelsammlung“ an die Anatomie gebracht, um seine Lehre um die der Anthropologie zu erweitern.

The project Provenance Research on the Non-European Anthropological Collection of the University Medical Center Rostock is funded by the Stiftung Deutsches Zentrum Kulturgutverluste (see press release, in German) for the period from 15.9.2020 to 14.9.2021. The Department of the History of Medicine and the Institute of Anatomy at the Rostock University Medical Centre are investigating the collection of non-European human skulls that are currently housed in the Institute of Anatomy. Around 150 years ago, the physician Friedrich Merkel (1845-1919) brought these to the Institute of Anatomy "Race-skull collection" in order to expand his teaching areas, to include anthropology.
